The Failed Chana Masala

September 9, 2015

Chana Masala

Here is where I would normally post the ingredients list and directions on how to make the food that I enjoyed today. However, tonight's meal was inedible. Well, technically edible, so… unpalatable? Is that a word? spell check says yes! It was unpalatable and horrible. I will disclaim that I am not the biggest fan of Indian food normally, but my wife, who does enjoy Indian food, took one bite and declared it unfit.

This was a recipe that my wife has made before and not followed the instructions hardly at all, as is our style, but me, having never made it before, and being somewhat unfamiliar with the flavour combinations of Indian food followed along quite closely. The result was way over spiced, way over gingered, and without calling for any salt what-so-ever, surprisingly salty.

It was bound to happen at some point, trying new recipes is all about exploring new flavours and new techniques, not everything is going to turn out perfect, and sometimes things aren't even going to turn out edible. I rarely have this happen anymore, but it still does happen on occasion, and tonight was just one of those nights. The more familiar you are with a style of cuisine, the less likely this is to happen, but it's always fun to try new things as well.

Luckily, this was a vegetarian dish, so the grand total for ingredients was in the range of 5 dollars, so it wasn't worth it for me to try to salvage something this far gone. I can usually turn things around but this one was just so far off the mark that I didn't even bother.

Editor's Note:  Cheer up, you can't win all of the time, I mean I do, but you can't expect to. I am of course kidding. You can never be afraid to fail when it comes to cooking. You will never find that great new flavour of you don't mix it up and try new things. But of course they can't all be good.

Cheers and Best wishes!

P.S I found out today that we are going to be out for dinner on Friday with some people my wife knows from work. We are going to their house for dinner, and we don't really know them very well. I am not going to ask to take pictures of the food and post a review of it, so I would like people to post suggestions for a dessert we can take with us, and I will take pictures of that and review it instead. Thanks!
