BLT Salad

September 2, 2015

BLT salad

Ingredients:

Lettuce
Tomatoes
Grated cheddar
Bacon (instructions here)
Croutons
Ranch dressing

Directions: I'm sure you can figure this one out on your own.

I was pretty excited for this one, we had a bunch of lettuce left over from meeting that needed to be used, so we thought this would be a good way to use a bunch of it. We all know you don't make friends with salad, but a heavy-on-the-bacon-salad seemed like a good option. While the bacon itself turned out fantastic (see here), the salad itself was disappointing. It wasn't BAD, but it didn't have the flavour profile I was expecting/hoping for. I think the problem was the Romaine lettuce and cheddar cheese: next time maybe spinach would be better. It had all the ingredients of a great BLT: crisp lettuce, fresh tomato, crunchy toast (croutons), smoky bacon, a sharp cheddar, and a creamy sauce, but it just didn't quite come together. Oh well, there is always tomorrow.

Editor's note: A balsamic vinaigrette  made with a good olive oil and minced fresh basil, rather than ranch would amplify the flavours of the other ingredients. Also ensure you use an old or aged cheddar. The use of spinach is duly recommended.
